Unity Through Humility

Philippians 2:1-4 (NKJV)

2 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

A lot of people are striving to follow Jesus in their daily lives and worship, but there is a lack of unity among them. If we want to have unity among those of us that are in a pursuit of Christ, we must use the Bible alone to determine how we live, what we believe, and how we worship. We would all be united if we did that!

The word of God does not cause divisions. Divisions are caused by the ideas of men taking place of the commands of God. That is why we see so many divisions and sects in Christianity today. Jesus rightfully accuses the Pharisees of this!

Mark 7:5-7 (NKJV)

5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?” 6 He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: this people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. 7 And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.

We should never allow this to happen! The only way we can fight against a “tradition over scripture” mentality is to check every word we hear from the pulpit and have knowledge to defend the truth when it is misrepresented or twisted to align with a doctrine of men.

We have to train ourselves for this battle and as each individual person grows in the grace and knowledge of Christ, the unity that King Jesus desires of those who follow Him will grow a little bit stronger.

Our King, Jesus The Christ, wants us to be like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. This unity is found in the truth and increased by love for each other.

What does this love look like? If we strive to love each other with the love Christ demonstrates toward us, we will let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each of us will esteem others better than ourselves. We must think less of ourselves and more highly of others!

I hope this gives everyone something to think about in the days to come! If you have any questions or would like to have a Bible study together, please contact me.
